Derrick M. Gildner
LPC

I am Derrick Gildner, born and raised just a few miles from the picturesque Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan. My journey began with a 10-year tenure in the USAF active duty, where I specialized in Atmospheric Physics, Meteorology, and Oceanography, serving as a Special Operations/Tactics Wx Forecaster and Jumpmaster. The thrill of the service and my passion for weather and its impact on operations kept me engaged.

As life moved forward, I made the transition to the USAF Reserves to explore my other interests. I pursued Public Relations and Photo Journalism to pave the way for completing my graduate studies and building a civilian career in the field of Psychology and Mental Health services. Alongside my studies, I had the opportunity to share my knowledge as an adjunct professor, teaching science, technology, and psychology to eager undergraduates.

My career path led me to work with adolescent adjudicated teenagers in locked facilities for DYC (Department of Youth Corrections) and DHS (Department of Human Services), including clients within the SOMB (Sex Offender Management Board) program. This experience provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by vulnerable youth and the importance of mental health support in their rehabilitation.

For a period, I worked at Colorado Access/BHI, dedicating myself to behavioral health authorizations for Medicaid Utilization Management, spanning across various levels of care. I later found myself working with standalone Behavioral Health Hospitals, gaining an even deeper understanding of the complexities of mental health care systems.

Over the last five years, I’ve been a part of the Centura and Adventist Health team at Porter Hospital. Here, I serve as an assessor and a therapist for the DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) group intensive outpatient program. The opportunity to work directly with patients and help them on their journey to recovery has been incredibly fulfilling.

On the personal front, I’ve been happily married for almost a decade, residing in the beautiful City Park of Denver. My passion for the natural world extends to my urban farm, where I share my life with an assortment of critters and maintain flourishing gardens. I suppose you could say my life is akin to that of Doctor Dolittle, surrounded by the company of animals and nature.

This unique blend of experiences and interests has shaped me into the person I am today, someone who finds joy in the convergence of science, mental health, and the wonders of nature. With the support of my loving partner, I continue to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of others while reveling in the beauty of the world around me.
